The right barcode scanner speeds up checkout, cuts stock errors and saves staff time. The wrong one slows everyone down. Ask these five questions before you buy.

1. 1D or 2D barcodes?

1D (linear) scanners read classic product barcodes. 2D scanners also read QR codes, codes on phone screens and damaged labels. For most new setups, 2D is the safer choice.

2. Corded or wireless?

Corded scanners suit a fixed checkout counter. Wireless (Bluetooth) scanners let staff move around the store or warehouse, typically up to 10–100 metres from the base.

3. Handheld or presentation?

Handheld scanners are pointed at the item. Presentation scanners sit on the counter and read items as they pass, which keeps both of the cashier's hands free.

4. How tough does it need to be?

Warehouses, factories and outdoor sites need rugged scanners with drop and IP ratings. Retail counters can use standard models.

5. Does it work with your system?

Check that it connects to your POS or ERP (USB, Bluetooth or serial). Most scanners work as a keyboard, so no extra software is needed.
